Wikimania 2009: Call for Participation

Last week the Wikimania 2009 team announced its Call for Participation for the annual, international conference of the Wikimedia Foundation. Wikimania 2009 will take place August 25-28, 2009 in Buenos Aires, Argentina at the Centro Cultural General San Martín.

Deadline for submitting workshop, panel, and presentation submissions is April 15th, posters, open space discussions, and artistic works have time until April 30th. There is a Casual Track, for members of wiki communities and interested observers to share their own experiences and thoughts and to present new ideas; and the Academic Track, for research based on the methods of scientific studies exploring the social, content or technical aspects of Wikipedia, the other Wikimedia projects, or other massively collaborative works, as well as open and free content creation and community dynamics more generally.

Wikimania 2010 will take place in Europa again in one of Amsterdam, Gdańsk, and Oxford (unless another city pops up until the end of this week).

Drei Wochen Urlaub ohne Computer (fast)

Dieses Blog ist wegen Urlaub vom 15.7. bis 10.8.2008 geschlossen.

Nachdem ich die Wikimania 2008 nächstes Wochenende hoffentlich überstanden habe (ich sitze noch immer an den Vorbereitungen – mein Poster ist natürlich noch nicht fertig, die Tasche nur halb gepackt; der Flug geht heute Abend), muss ich erstmal Urlaub machen. Am Sonntag geht es zunächst von Alexandria zum obligatorischen Besuch der Pyramiden nach Cairo. Am Mittwoch fliege ich dann morgens mit dem Flugzeug in einer Stunden (statt im Bus in sieben) nach Sharm El Sheik. Ãœber Holidaycheck.de habe ich das New Tiran Hotel gefunden, welches mit 50 USD pro Nacht vergleichsweise günstig ist – vor allem, da es direkt in der Na’ama Bay liegt. Dort verbringe ich drei Tagen mit dem Sinai Dive Club, den mir meine Tauchschule empfohlen hat. Danach geht es irgendwie mit dem Bus durch die Wüste nach Taba, um bei Eilat die Grenze zu Israel zu überqueren (ohne Tunnel). Was ich im einzigen vor Antisemitismus Schutz bietenden Land (und der einzigen Demokratie im Nahen Osten) und im Rest des Urlaubs unternehme, weiß ich noch noch nicht.

Die ganze Reise bin ich ohne eigenen Computer (!), so wie früher, als noch nicht jeder mit Notebook oder Netbook herumlief (die Älteren werden sich noch vage daran erinnern). Ok, Handy, Digitalkamera, Tauchcomputer, Internetcafé etc. zählen nicht… 😉

Wikimania 2008 schedule published

Last week the schedule of Wikimania 2008 finally was published online (Brianna already blogged). The annual conference devoted to Wikipedia, all other Wikimedia projects and free knowledge in general will take place at the Library of Alexandria in Egypt at July 17–19, 2008. There are more interesting talks then I will be able to participate – for instance about OpenStreetMap which is like Wikipedia for maps in my opinion. By the way the free OSM map of Alexandria is pretty poor – you can join in improving it!.

In 2008 the Wikimania conference – that is the annual conference of Wikimedia Foundation devoted to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikibooks, Wikisource etc. and Free Knowledge – will take place at the Library of Alexandria in Egypt at July 17–19, 2008. The Call for Participation is out now. Final deadline for submission is March 16th 2008. Please spread the word among Wikimedia communities, researchers and other people and join us in Alexandria!

P.S: Yes, Alexandria will have Internet connection again in July 😉
